Grover Jackson spent his early years in the business building and supplying guitar parts under the Charvel brandname. Things changed dramatically in 1980 when he collaborated with Randy Rhoades to design a variant of the Gibson Flying V. At this point in time the Jackson brand was born.

The strength of the Jackson guitar brand was its willingness to innovate and deliver something original to an emerging group of fast players like Vivian Campbell and George Lynch. Eventually the custom designs gained in popularity leading to the production of model ranges including the Randy Rhoads, Soloist, Kelly, Double Rhoads and King V. It was the superstrat design of the Soloist that became the most influential guitar design of the 1980's and cemented the Jackson brand as a top of the range guitar manufacturer.

After Jackson left the company in 1989 three main product lines emerged - Custom Shop, US Series and Jackson Professional. Custom Shop and US Series guitars were manufactured in the US to to exacting standards and high prices. The Jackson Professional range was built in Japan as a means of introducing high quality versions of the American originals to a wider market. This trend has continued with some models built in Japan Concept Series), Korea (Performer Series) and India (X Series).
